The Challenges of Grinding Aluminum Parts
The customer provided detailed information in their drawing design which made their requirements and dimensions crystal clear. The diameter was to be around 12″ and the height, which was ground, was around 1″ +.0005 with a 16 micro-inch finish.
The challenge involved determining the optimal fixturing to hold the part in the machine. One of the most important things to understand about precision rotary grinding for aluminum parts is that it’s a far more delicate process than many people realize. Working with a malleable, non-ferrous material like aluminum requires a stable means of holding the workpiece to ensure accurate grinding without scratching or denting the surface.
To overcome this challenge, we take several strong magnetic blocks and place them strategically to brace the piece in place. This means that the part in question is held securely throughout the grinding process without causing damage to the surface of the metal.
