Precision OD Grinding, ID Grinding Operations for Lens Focusing Assembly
The part was a piston designed to fit into a pole for a lens assembly that required surface grinding and outer diameter grinding (OD). The piston required OD grinding at about Ø1.75 within 0.0003 inches. The pole needed internal diameter grinding (ID) at Ø1.75, within 0.0003 inches and runout within 0.0001 inches.
While the task seemed straightforward, there were a few challenges our team had to overcome. The first occurred immediately after we received the part when we realized it was damaged with various nicks, dents, and dings. The pole was a steel liner assembled into an anodized aluminum housing, a softer material that can be particularly susceptible to impact damage. After discussing the problem and proposed resolution with the client, we deburred the piece so that it could be more accurately and safely held in our machines.
